Authorities are investigating after a shooting over the weekend left a teenager dead and another injured, according to the Gainesville Police Department.
Police responded to reports of a vehicle crash and shots fired at 8:00 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, on Hillcrest Avenue in Gainesville, where emergency crews discovered the body of a 17-year-old teenager.
The teenager was later identified as Aristo Ramirez of Gainesville. Police say Ramirez was pronounced dead at the scene from an apparent gunshot wound.
A second individual, a 16-year-old male, also was located and transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the foot. The teen is currently receiving treatment for his injuries, which are not believed to be life-threatening.
Early investigations suggest the shooting and crash were possibly connected, and police indicate Ramirez may have been shot prior to losing control of the vehicle. Authorities say the second teen, who allegedly fled the scene on foot before police arrived, is considered a person of interest in the case.
The Gainesville Police Department is actively investigating this incident and asks that anyone with information to contact law enforcement at 911 or submit a tip online.
This is an ongoing investigation, and further updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
