Week 1 made for a very long Friday night. Nearly every game in the northeast Georgia area was delayed by lightning and monsoon-style rain.
The White County Warriors and Lumpkin County Indians squared off in Dahlonega, marking the first game of the season for Lumpkin and new head coach Shane Williamson. White County played in Week 0, falling to Franklin County. Seven minutes into the game, Lumpkin was driving just inside White County territory when the rain poured out and lightning struck within the area, prompting an evacuation of the field.
After well over an hour of waiting, the game was called when lightning continued to strike in the area. GHSA maintains that a game must wait 30 minutes before resuming play following a lightning strike in the vicinity. Unfortunately for Lumpkin and White County, the lighting persisted, each time stretching the wait time another 30 minutes. Since the game was a non-region contest, it will not be made up and the game is considered a no-contest.
White County held a 34-11-1 lead in the all-time series between the rivals.
Note: Per GHSA rules, any game that is called prior to one half being completed results in a “no-contest” despite the score. Any game that is called after one half will be called “final” with the score as such. If teams are in the same classification, the game must be played to completion, either that night or at a later date. In those instances, the 11:30 p.m. mandatory curfew is also waived.
