UPDATE: The Boil Water Advisory has been lifted

A water outage forced dozens of restaurants along I-85 in Commerce to close Wednesday. The outage at Banks Crossing impacted businesses along a nearly mile-long stretch of road between Popeye’s north of the interchange to Quick Trip south of the interchange.

The water went out around 8:30 Wednesday morning. By early evening, utility crews had restored most of the service. Restaurants that experienced outages are now operating under a boil water advisory until further notice.

“They should have water now, but it’s not sanitary until in the morning when we clear it,” says Commerce Utilities Director Bill King. “They can’t drink the water out of the tap. They can wash their dishes.”

King says a valve shifted during the construction of the new median on GA 15/US 441, causing the outage.

“We’re going to be flushing and chlorinating tonight. In the morning, we’ll get the lines cleared,” he says.

He commends the utility crews who worked hard in the heat to restore service, saying, “It’s been a hot, sweaty day, but they’re doing great.” He also extends his gratitude to the business owners and members of the public for their patience.
