When Habersham Central hosted White County on Friday in Mt. Airy, we all knew one team would get their first win of the season. It was Hab Central (1-2) who came out victorious, 31-28 after leading from the end of the first quarter on.
The Warriors (0-2) got on the board first when Noel Lammers scored from 4 yards out on the opening drive. The Raiders responded when Antonio Cantrell made a dive at the goal line on what went as a 7-yd TD run.
Less than a minute to go in the quarter, Habersham took the lead for good on a Paris Wilbanks QB keep from 8 ticks out. Adding to it, the Raiders took advantage of a White County fumble and punched it in on a Wilbanks-to-Zeke Whittington 8-yd TD to push the lead up to 21-7.
The Warriors needed a score and got one, as Lammers found pay dirt on a 9-yd score. The Raiders threw a costly interception, but White County did the same. Both came in the red zone. Habersham motored down the field, and Camden Meads connected on a beautiful 46-yd field goal as time expired for the 24-14 halftime lead.
Out of the break, the Raiders had the ball, but Wilbanks was picked off by Zach Godfrey, who took it all the way back for the score. That bridged the deficit to 24-21. The Raiders then got the score back on a Cantrell 16-yd TD. That made it 31-21, and the Warriors would add a Lammers TD midway through the final quarter to cap the scoring.
Lammers had 3 TD runs, and Wilbanks threw and ran for a score, while Cantrell had 2 TDs rushing.
