Walter “Opossum” Garrett, age 83, of Toccoa, Georgia went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, August 4, 2020, following a brief illness.
Mr. Garrett was born on November 13, 1936, in Meridian, Mississippi to the late Walter Neil and Juanita Rayburn Garrett. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Anita Knight; step-son, Scott Heaton; mother-in-law, Frances Phillips; and father-in-law, Noah Williams. Mr. Garrett was retired from the United States Navy, serving his country honorably for 20 years. After retirement, he drove a long haul transfer truck for Garrett Trucking for 15 years. Mr. Garrett was a member of the Meridian Methodist Church. Walter loved his family and step-children very much; and his fur babies, Eleanor and Bella.
Survivors include his loving wife of 37 years, Janette Garrett, of Toccoa; step-sons, Ricky Heaton, of Royston; Bill Heaton, of Gainesville; five grandchildren, one step-grandchild; numerous great-grandchildren; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Robert and Hope Williams, of Bowersville; nephews, Craig Knight and Keith Knight, of Meridian, MS; several nieces, of Hart County; niece, Kim Houston, of Lavonia; and a special cousin, Buddy Garrett, of Meridian, MS.
Memorial Services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, September 20, 2020, at the Whitfield Funeral Home, South Chapel with Rev. Bruce Moore officiating.
