Walter Lewis “Sonny” Jones, age 86, of Alto, Georgia, passed away on Thursday, February 6, 2025, at his residence.
Mr. Jones was born on October 1, 1938, at the Charm House in Clarkesville, Georgia, to the late Raleigh and Ruth Gerrin Jones. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 59 years, Doris Armour Jones; sister, Wanda Jones Armour and nephew, Donald Armour; niece who was raised in his home, Ann Cathey; sisters-in-law, Geneva Armour Wade, Imogene Wade, Montine Armour, Beulah Armour, Barbara Armour; brothers-in-law, Bennie Armour, Perry Armour, and Michael Ferguson.
Mr. Jones was of the Baptist Faith and attended Mud Creek Baptist Church. Sonny was a United States Veteran, having served in the United States Air Force. He was a retired truck driver and formerly employed with Chicopee Manufacturing. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and “Papa,” as he was known to all of his grandchildren.
Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Rhonda Jones Loudermilk and Brian Loudermilk, of Alto; son and daughter-in-law, Rodney and Julia Rae Jones, of Alto; sons, Ronald Jones, of Alto; Randy Jones, of Alto; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Joydean and Jerry Martin, of Cornelia; Linda Ferguson, of Alto; Patsy Armour, of Alto; Ralph and Faye Armour, of Alto; L.J. Armour, of Alto; grandchildren, Daniel, Chris, Jessi, Chea, Cody, Amber, Whitney, MaKenzie, Kyson; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, February 9, 2025, at the Whitfield Funeral Home, North Chapel, with Pastor Lamar Kastner and Pastor Ed Chambers officiating. Interment will follow in the Yonah Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by the United States Air Force and the Grant Reeves Honor Guard.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Saturday, February 8, 2025, at the funeral home.
