Voting Error May Force New Election in Demorest

Voters in Demorest may have to head back to the polls. Election officials say they’ve discovered a voting error that could be used to throw out the results of Tuesday’s election.

Habersham County Election Supervisor Laurel Ellison says a voter was mistakenly allowed to vote twice — once by absentee ballot and a second time at the polls. “Unfortunately this was not caught until after the winners had been announced,” Ellison stated in an announcement issued late Wednesday. “Proper protocol was not followed at the precinct on the day of the election.”

Due to that error, an affected candidate or qualified voter may request that the Superior Court Judge nullify the election held on November 3, 2015 and order a new election for the City of Demorest.

The unofficial returns from Tuesday’s election showed Florence Wikle and Donnie Bennett winning over challengers John Popham and Rebecca Shedd. Bennett defeated Popham by 1 vote for second place in the four-person race for two at-large city council seats.
