Three municipalities held elections today, and wet weather was one reason for low voter turnouts in the morning. The cities of Baldwin and Demorest and the town of Tallulah Falls opened their polling places at 7:00 a.m.
The city of Baldwin’s voting was on three city council members, and the city also was holding a referendum on a Freeport Exemption for the city. Poll manager Juanita Clark said “25 people had been there” by 9:30 this morning. Although the turnout by that time was “low,” she said “I believe it will pick up.”
Jo Owenby was the poll manager for the city of Demorest. There were four candidates running for two city council seats, she said, and there were referendums on “selling liquor by the drink” as well as alcohol “sales on Sunday,” she said. Thirty-nine people had voted Tuesday morning.
The town of Tallulah Falls had perhaps the highest percentage of voter turnout.
“Actually, it’s been pretty good,” poll manager Marcia McKean said of the numbers. There had been 34 of the town’s 139 registered voters voting before noon, she said.
On the ballot were two candidates for the mayoral position and three candidates – including an incumbent – for two town council seats. One of the town’s poll officers, Lee Mavroleon, said he would like to suggest “maybe a town meeting in the future,” to help voters “see who’s running.”
Polls close at 7 p.m. Now Habersham will bring you the election results as they come in.
