Georgia residents have until Monday, Oct. 7, to register to vote in the upcoming November General Election. Early voting begins Tuesday, Oct. 15, and absentee ballots are available starting Oct. 7.

To register to vote, residents must be U.S. citizens, legal residents of their county of registration, at least 17 1/2 years old to register and 18 years old to vote, and not serving a felony sentence or found mentally incompetent.

Registration can be completed in person at county voter registration offices or online through the Georgia Secretary of State’s website at My Voter Page. Voters can also use this website to check their registration status and find voter ID requirements.

Absentee by mail

Absentee ballots will be mailed from Oct. 7 to Oct. 25. Voters can request a ballot from their local elections office, mail it in, or drop it off at their county’s designated drop box. Habersham County’s drop box is located in the lobby of the county elections office at 403 Habersham County Shopping Center in Cornelia and is accessible during business and voting hours.

If voting by mail, leave yourself enough time to receive and return your ballot by election day. Recent mail delivery delays in Georgia have raised concern about the reliability of mail-in ballots. However, local postal workers say that mail deliveries from the Palmetto, Georgia, USPS Distribution Center have improved in recent months.

Ballots not returned to their designated election office by 7 p.m. on November 5 will not be counted.

Advance voting will take place the week of Oct. 28 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
