Time’s running out to register to vote in the November General Election. The deadline is Tuesday, Oct. 11th. If you register after that day you will not be eligible to cast your ballot in the presidential election.
To register to vote you must:
- Be a citizen of the United States
- Be a legal resident of the county
- Be at least 17½ years of age (at least 18 to vote)
- Not be serving a sentence for conviction of a felony involving moral turpitude (any base or vile conduct, contrary to accepted morals, that accompanies a crime)
- Have not been found mentally incompetent by a judge
“It has never been easier to register to vote in our state,” says Secretary of State Brian Kemp. “For the first time in Georgia, voters can register to vote or update their information online, via text, or by using my office’s smartphone app.”
You can submit an electronic voter registration application using your Georgia driver’s license number or state-issued identification card number on several platforms: Online Voter Registration (OLVR), the free “GA SOS” mobile app for Apple and Android devices, and “2VOTE” text messaging pilot project.
You may also register in person at your local registrar’s office. In Habersham, the office is located in the basement of the County Administration Building (old courthouse) located at 555 Monroe Street in Clarkesville.
Other places you can register under the state’s Motor Voter Law:
- Department of Public Safety (when renewing your driver’s license)
- Mail-in Applications (applications are available at almost all government offices)
- Department of Human Resources (Health Department, rehabilitation facility, Department of Family and Children’s Services)
- State-funded offices for the physically disabled
- Recruitment offices (Post Office)
- Libraries (any local library)
Keep in mind, all federal, state and Habersham county offices are closed Monday, Oct. 10th for Columbus Day, so, you’re best bet for registering at this late date is to do it electronically or in person on Tuesday.
If you’ve moved or made other changes that might affect your voter registration, you should update your information before Oct. 11th. You can do that by visiting the “My Voter Page” on the Secretary of State’s website.
