The 2nd annual Trunk-Or-Treat for Special Needs Families is coming to Clarkesville on October 19. The event is expanding this year to include games and a free cakewalk.
Organizers are now asking for community volunteers to help with the activities.
“We need volunteers who will decorate their cars and pass out the candy and volunteers to bake cakes,” says Rhonda Stamey who organized the inaugural event last year and is back at it again. They also need people willing to donate candy and lots of it.
Fifty families attended last year’s event and this year, as word spreads, it’s expected more families from around Northeast Georgia may attend.
This trunk-or-treat event is designed with special needs families in mind. It’s held in an area that’s off the road and easily accessible for those in wheelchairs and on crutches and walkers. Also, because it’s organized by people with special needs children – Stamey’s son, Nate, is autistic – it provides a safe, fun environment that’s more carefully controlled than many other public Halloween festivities.
All children and adults with special needs and their families are welcome to attend. There is no age limit. The event will be held from 3-5 p.m. on Saturday, October 19, at Diamond Memorial Baseball Fields in Clarkesville.
