Volunteers For Literacy (VFL) will hold its 5th Annual Rubber Duck Race on the Soque River at 3:30 pm on Saturday, May 21, 2016. Part of the annual Mountain Laurel Festival sponsored by the City of Clarkesville, as many as 2250 rubber ducks will race down the Soque River from the Georgia Highway 197 bridge at Sam Pitt’s Park after being dumped in the river from a Georgia Power truck.
Kayakers will be in the river to make sure all ducks get in the race and swim to the finish line at the end of Pitt’s Park. The person who holds the number of the winning duck will receive a $500 cash award, with second place paying $300 and third place, $200. Winners will be announced at 4pm at the Pitts Park stage. You do not have to be present to win.
Each duck is numbered with duck race tickets having corresponding numbers.
Tickets are $5 each and may be purchased from any VFL board member or at Clarkesville and Cornelia Libraries, Soque River Watershed Association or online at www.vflhabersham.com. Several of the rubber duckies will be swimming at Chick-Fil-A Family Night on Thursday, April 28 from 5 – 7pm. Prizes and crafts will be offered for children and tickets will be available to purchase.
Tickets also will be available at the Mountain Laurel Festival on May 20 and 21. Proceeds will be used to support literacy programs in Habersham County.
