Volatile weather hits Habersham

It’s been a weird weather day in Habersham County and the cold front that is making its way through is packing a punch. The front spawned thunderstorms early this morning and a hail storm this afternoon. Forecasters warn of the possibility of more severe weather. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Greenville has issued a Tornado Watch until 8 p.m. for much of the region.

A tornado warning was issued mid-afternoon for eastern Gwinnett, northwestern Barrow, southeastern Hall and west central Jackson Counties.

This morning’s rain fell fast and furious in Habersham County but was followed by glistening sun at around 8 a.m. The sun held on for a few hours before giving way to gray skies and more rumbling thunderstorms. A hail storm quickly passed through Habersham County starting around 1:30 p.m. Now Habersham readers reported hail fell in Clarkesville, Cornelia, Demorest Fairview, Hollywood and Mt. Airy. The icy stones fell in other parts of Northeast Georgia, as well.

By 2:30 p.m. the weather had calmed down considerably but distant thunder still rumbles. The National Weather Service says isolated tornadoes are possible, “…mainly across the Piedmont of the Carolinas and Northeast Georgia.” You should be prepared to take precautions in the event of a tornado and watch out for high water levels. Days of incessant rain have caused water levels in rivers and streams to rise and the NWS warns isolated flooding could occur.

The forecast calls for sunshine to return tomorrow.
