Habersham Veterans Wall of Honor to benefit from 5K and Fun Run

Local veterans and their families are teaming up with the Habersham County Chamber of Commerce to support the chamber’s annual 5K and Fun Run. This year’s event has been rebranded as the Habersham Freedom Run. It will take place the weekend before Veterans Day and will again be held alongside Lake Russell in the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forest in Mt. Airy.

“We’re rebranding it this year to better recognize veterans,” says Chamber President Judy Taylor. “Participants may run or walk for a veteran who can’t or be a phantom runner to support the cause.”

The event will also include a one-mile fun run.  All pre-registered participants in either the 5K, the one-mile fun run or as a phantom runner will get a race-day t-shirt.

This event is a fundraiser for the Habersham Veterans Wall of Honor and the Habersham County Chamber of Commerce community and educational projects.

Taylor says members of the Grant-Reeves Post 7720 in Cornelia will carry the American flag, a MIA-POW flag, and the Post flag from start through the finish line.  “It will be an awesome sight to see these veterans who have all seen active duty outside the United States cross the finish line,” she says.

Registration now underway

Awards will be given for the fun run and the 5K plus overall and master awards in both male and female categories for the 5K.  A brief patriotic program will precede the race start and energize all participants to do their best for a great cause.

You may register online now at Active.com or in the Chamber office located at 668 US-441 BUS, Cornelia, GA 30531. The cost is $25 through October 27 and $30 after early sign up ends. Group rates are available. You may also register on the day of the race, Saturday, November 4, beginning at 8 a.m. The Habersham Freedom Run 5K and Fun Run both begin at 9 a.m.

Presenting sponsor for the event is North Georgia Network (NGN).  Sponsorships are still available at the Gold (corporate), Silver and Community Support levels.
