A community-wide Veterans Day program will be held this morning at Hilliard A. Wilbanks Middle School in Demorest. The annual event begins at 10 a.m. in the school’s gymnasium.
Veterans Day is a particularly poignant time at Wilbanks Middle School. The school is named for local Medal of Honor recipient Capt. Hilliard A. Wilbanks. Wilbanks was a U.S. Air Force pilot killed in Vietnam on February 24, 1967, while providing aerial cover for ground troops. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor and was inducted into the Georgia Military Hall of Fame in 2013.
Today’s program is the last in a series of community-wide Veterans Day programs sponsored by local schools.
Yesterday veterans were honored during special observances at South Habersham Middle School in Cornelia and at North Georgia Technical College and North Habersham Middle School in Clarkesville
