One person was taken to the hospital with serious injuries after a passenger van hit a tractor-trailer on I-85 southbound in Franklin County, according to the GSP.

The crash was reported at around 4:27 p.m. Thursday near mile marker 160, the GSP said in a release. Troopers say a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van was driving southbound behind a Freightliner tractor-trailer when the Freightliner stopped for traffic ahead, the GSP says. The Mercedes-Benz hit the rear trailer of the Freightliner.

The Mercedes-Benz driver, Nermin Nakic, 35, of Dacula, had to be extricated from the wreckage and was flown to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville with serious injuries, state troopers say. The driver of the Freightliner, Jovanny Mary Martinez, 44, of Columbus, had non-life-threatening injuries and was not taken to the hospital.

Troopers from Georgia State Patrol Post 52 in Hartwell investigated the accident. They say there’s nothing to indicate driver impairment. They say Nakic will be charged with following too close when he’s released from the hospital.

Both southbound lanes of I-85 were closed for about an hour and a half as a result of the crash.
