The U.S. Forest Service will conduct a controlled burn Saturday on 1,136 acres at Pear Orchard, four miles southwest of Toccoa. The area is part of the Lake Russell Wildlife Management Area.
Labeling it #GoodFire, USFS says the purpose of the burn is to improve wildlife habitat and reduce hazardous fuel overgrowth in the area. Every year, fire managers treat around 35,000 acres on the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests through prescribed fire.
The Chattooga River Ranger District managed a prescribed fire in the Shirley Grove area Friday, two miles southwest of Tallulah Falls. Fire managers used drones to ignite portions of that fire. See how they did it in the video below.
