Rainbow Family gathering could draw up to 10K

Unauthorized gathering in Lumpkin County results in temporary forest road closures and public safety concerns

Self-proclaimed hippies are gathering in Lumpkin County for what is expected to be one of the largest peace gatherings in the world.

The Rainbow Family of Living Light is holding their 2018 Annual Rainbow Gathering in the Chattahoochee National Forest about 15 minutes from Dahlonega.

A press release from the U.S. Forest Service says the unauthorized gathering could draw anywhere from 2,000 — 10,000 people. Officials expect the attendance to peak the week of July 4.

“Any event of this size can have significant impacts on local communities, natural resources, traffic, and visitors,” the release states.

The Rainbow Family describes itself as a loosely knit group that gathers on National Forests to discuss political and environmental issues, pray for world peace, and celebrate life.

Roads and trails impacted

The Forestry Service has temporarily shut down some service roads and implemented restrictions in the Nimblewill area of Lumpkin County for public safety. Those changes will likely impact local outdoor enthusiasts looking to hike or ride trails over the Fourth of July holiday.

The Forestry Service says trail users should be aware of increased pedestrian use and “exercise proper trail etiquette in sharing trails.”
