United Way Family Fun Fest TONIGHT

The annual United Way Family Fun Fest is tonight, Saturday, August 29, from 5-9PM at the Ruby C. Fulbright Aquatic Center in Clarkesville. It’s the official kick-off to the local United Way’s annual fundraising campaign.

The Fun Fest provides affordable family entertainment while raising money for a good cause.

Admission is $5 for everyone and includes unlimited rides, games, entertainment and fireworks. Food and merchandise are sold separately. VIP parking will be available in front of the Aquatic Center for $15 – the price includes a coupon for a free car wash. Free shuttle buses will be available.

Cash and credit cards accepted

Habersham County Executive Director Billy Boyd says two new events have been added this year – laser tag and sumo wrestling (the inflatable bodysuit kind). Other than that, “Basically the games and rides are what we’ve had for the past few years,” he says.

This is Boyd’s first year at the helm of United Way organizing Family Fun Fest. He succeeded Bonnie Loffredo as executive director last fall. “I don’t think I had a grasp of how much work and coordination of effort goes into making this happen,” he says. “There are three, four, five hundred people involved. It’s a huge event and we couldn’t do it without volunteers and community support from our sponsors.” Boyd says he’s hoping for good weather and a good turnout this evening.

The Habersham County United Way supports 25 non-profit agencies. This year’s fundraising goal is $575,000. The campaign theme is “Get in the Game” and Boyd says, “It’s certainly a team effort, that’s for sure.
