UNG named a top producer of Fulbright students

UNG has been named the top producer of Fulbright students in its category nationwide with seven selections for the 2024-25 academic year. One of those selections is Audrey Gleason, who is serving as an English teaching assistant in Germany (UNG)

The University of North Georgia (UNG) has earned the distinction of being the top producer of Fulbright students among U.S. master’s institutions for the 2024-25 academic year.

The recognition, announced by the U.S. Department of State on February 25, highlights UNG’s impressive achievement of securing seven Fulbright U.S. Student Program selections. The prestigious list placed UNG at the forefront of nine master’s universities nationwide, solidifying its position as a leader in fostering academic excellence and global engagement.

“UNG’s Leadership Foundry helps produce leaders of character who are ready to make an impact across the world,” UNG President Michael Shannon said. “We have no doubt these young leaders will use their Fulbright experience to become even more prepared for what comes next.”

The Fulbright Program, one of the most prestigious and competitive fellowships in the world, allows recent graduates and graduate students to conduct research, earn graduate degrees, or teach English abroad. With the goal of fostering mutual understanding between U.S. citizens and residents of over 160 countries, the program plays a key role in building global connections and cultural exchange.

“Our students consistently impress me with their desire to pursue global opportunities and their determination in bringing these dreams to fruition,” Dr. Anastasia Lin, assistant vice president for Academic Affairs and director of the Nationally Competitive Scholarships Office, said. “These overseas experiences expand their perspective and prepare them to lead in whatever career fields they enter.”

Audrey Gleason, a May 2024 graduate from the University of North Georgia (UNG), is spending the academic year in Germany as an English teaching assistant through the prestigious Fulbright Program. Gleason, who earned a degree in English with a concentration in writing and publication and a minor in German, has always dreamed of visiting Germany. Her Fulbright advisor, Dr. Lin, encouraged her to consider applying for the opportunity.

Based in Germany, Gleason works with students from fifth to 12th grade, assisting in areas such as grammar, literary analysis, and oral exam preparation. In addition to her teaching responsibilities, she has relished the chance to immerse herself in German culture and explore the country.

“It’s been a really good experience. It has challenged me in many good ways. It’s my first time abroad,” Gleason said. “So, living here for a year was somewhat of a jump in the deep end experience. Forging connections in school, outside of school and through the Fulbright network has been incredible. I have learned so much through these relationships as we share our perspectives and learn from one another.”

Rae-Lynn Cifizzari, a December 2023 graduate from the University of North Georgia (UNG) with a degree in modern languages and a concentration in Chinese language and literature, is currently serving as an English teaching assistant in Taiwan for the 2024-25 academic year. Cifizzari teaches students in first through sixth grade at two schools.

A resident of Braselton, Cifizzari has fully embraced the culture of her host country. Among her most rewarding experiences have been working closely with students, building meaningful relationships with fellow educators, and becoming a part of the local community.

“I have been able to expand my horizons and explore new interests,” Cifizzari said. “I’ve most enjoyed being part of the process to help develop new teaching methods, especially helping to define the English teaching assistant role and what assistance can be provided.”
