UGA’s Kirby Smart helicopters into Rabun to see Gunner Stockton

Things are heating up in Gunner Stockton’s world! #2022

It was all but ordinary on Thursday morning in Tiger, as a helicopter landed on the Rabun County practice football fields, carrying University of Georgia Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart.

Smart is just one of hundreds who are hovering over Gunner Stockton, a freshman who is set to become perhaps the most sought-after quarterback in the class of 2022.

Stockton recently wrapped up his freshman season for Rabun County, stepping into huge shoes and filling them rather nicely to the tune of 2,917 passing yards and 34 TDs. The dual threat added 709 yards on the ground and another 17 scores, giving him 3,626 total yards and 51 touchdowns. He showed great poise and control, completing 65% of his passes and throwing just six interceptions.

In the wake of his 2018 campaign, Stockton has been named BLITZ Player of the Year, Region 8-AA Offensive Player of the Year, All-State Class 2A by the GACA and Georgia Sports Writers Association, and recently a MaxPreps All-American.

National champs Clemson and perennial powerhouse Alabama paid Stockton a visit at Rabun County High School on Friday.

College programs around the country have had him on their radar, but things are sure to heat up after Smart’s visit to check up on him and meet with Wildcats’ coach Jaybo Shaw. Stockton already holds offers from Georgia Tech, Colorado State, Tennessee Tech, Arkansas State, which is merely a prelude to many more offers during the next few seasons by top programs in the country.

Stockton is listed at 6’1, 196 pounds, and is expected to make an official visit to UGA this coming weekend. The quarterback is also expected to be a high 4- or 5-star recruit when rankings become available for the 2022 class.
