First responders rescued two kayakers stranded by rushing waters on the Chattahoochee River Friday morning. They found one of the kayakers clinging to a tree in the Buck Shoals area.
Rescuers located the stranded man after he dialed 911 from his cellphone. White County dispatchers pinged his location through the county’s enhanced 911 system.
The caller was located on Habersham’s side of the river so White County called for assistance. They continued their search for a second missing kayaker while Habersham crews rescued the first.
White County firefighters and Department of Natural Resources officers found the second kayaker on the riverbank about a mile away.
The men were among three kayakers who set out on the rain-swollen river early Friday. E-911 dispatched crews to help them around 9:50 a.m. Emergency personnel spent three-and-a-half hours on the scene.
No one was injured.
The third kayaker was safely located at the take-out spot at Wildwood Outfitters near Duncan Bridge Road.
