Two killed in weekend accidents in Athens

A pedestrian and a driver were killed in separate accidents in Athens over the weekend.

Athens-Clarke County police say John Clark, 59, of Athens, died after a car hit him on the GA 10 Outer Loop near Chase Street.

The collision happened around 12:40 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 10.

According to police, Michael Sorrells, 43, of Hull, was driving a Honda Accord west in the inside lane of the outer loop when he struck Clark. Police found Clark’s body in the center median of the Outer Loop. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

At present, no charges are pending against Sorrells. Police say the investigation is ongoing.

Athens-Clarke County police are also investigating a deadly collision on Veterans Day.

At approximately 12:25 p.m. on Nov. 11, officers responded to a report of a vehicle leaving the roadway on Buddy Christian Way.

The initial investigation determined that Kenry Monterola, 28, of Athens, was driving a Toyota Camry eastbound when he crossed the center line in a curve near the Athens Regional Police Academy. The car traveled into oncoming traffic and left the roadway.

No other vehicles were involved in the incident.

Athens-Clarke County Fire and Emergency Services and EMS extricated Monterola from the vehicle. EMS transported him to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries.
