A tow truck pulls the victims’ vehicle from a ditch along GA 365 in Baldwin where it landed after being rear-ended by this Mazda CX-5 just before noon on Sunday, March 13, 2016.
A Duluth, Georgia woman is charged with DUI in connection with a two-vehicle accident that killed two women on GA 365 South in Baldwin on Sunday.
Senior Trooper Jason Stephens with the Georgia State Patrol says 35-year old Kathleen Susan Hamilton Steffens of Duluth, Georgia was traveling southbound on GA 365 just north of Duncan Bridge Road when her Mazda CX-5 ran off the road and rear-ended a Honda SUV parked on the west shoulder of the road.
63-year old Teddye Sue Martin of Tyrone, Georgia and her 26-year old daughter-in-law Elise Nicole Martin of Atlanta were killed. The elder Martin reportedly had pulled onto the shoulder of the road and gotten out of her vehicle after becoming ill. She was outside the vehicle when the accident happened. Elise Martin was sitting in the back seat. Both women died at the scene.
Another passenger, Teddye Sue Martin’s 25-year old daughter Mollly, was in the front passenger seat. She sustained injuries to her upper extremities, according to the GSP report, and was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville.
Steffens was also transported to NGMC with non-life threatening injuries. She’s charged with DUI, two counts of homicide by vehicle 1st degree, serious injury by motor vehicle and failure to maintain lane.
The wreck was called in to GSP at 11:55 a.m. Both southbound lanes of 365 between Level Grove Road and Duncan Bridge were shut down for several hours and traffic was detoured as emergency crews cleared the scene.
The Georgia State Patrol Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team B (SKIRT) is performing an independent investigation.
