A head on collision on GA 197 early Wednesday sent two people to the hospital.16-year old Andrew Dunlap of Clarkesville was traveling south on 197 when the Pontiac G6 he was driving crossed over the center line into the northbound lane, according to the Georgia State Patrol. Dunlap’s car collided with a Toyota Highlander driven by 52-year old Kirsti Louise Matson of Lula.
The accident happened at 7:55 a.m. near Rodeo Circle just south of Clarkesville.
Dunlap’s car came to a final rest in the middle of the road facing south. Matson’s vehicle came to a final rest facing west in the northbound lane of GA 197. The roadway was blocked, snarling school morning traffic as emergency crews worked to clear the scene.
Dunlap is a junior at Habersham Central High School and a member of the Raider varsity football team. One of the team’s fan pages posted a notice about the accident and is gathering online get well wishes to send to him.
Both Dunlap and Matson were transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville. Dunlap is charged with failure to maintain lane.
