Two arrested in connection to Athens brawl shooting

Two people have been arrested in connection with a shooting during a street brawl in Athens on Oct. 29.

On November 3, the Jefferson Police Department and Athens-Clarke County Police Department Safe Streets unit arrested Ismael Tapia Marquez, 24, of Athens. Police charged Marquez with two counts of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

Police arrested another suspect, Israel Tapia, 20, of Athens, on Nov. 4. Tapia is charged with battery, simple battery, and making false statements.

Two people were shot during the brawl which broke out around 2 a.m. in the 100 block of West Clayton Street. Both victims were transported to an area hospital with serious injuries but are expected to survive, police say.

Several subjects involved in the fight are still outstanding. Video footage of the incident shows several bystanders filming the fight and subsequent shooting.
