Tuesday last day to vote in state runoff and HD 28 rerun

It’s been a long election year but it’s almost over. On Tuesday, December 4, voters in Habersham will help decide two statewide offices and one local State House race.

Judging by the polling numbers, the runoff for Secretary of State and District 3 Public Service Commission has garnered relatively low interest among Habersham County voters. By the end of advance voting on Friday, only 3,307 of the county’s 24,707 active registered voters had cast ballots. That’s a 13% voter turnout rate.

The turnout rate is slightly higher for the State House District 28 Special Republican Primary. Incumbent Rep. Dan Gasaway is facing off again at the polls against challenger Chris Erwin. As of Friday, 854 of the district’s 5,218 active registered voters in Habersham County had cast ballots. That’s a turnout rate of just over 16%.

The HD 28 election is a rerun of the primary that took place on May 22. Erwin won that primary by 67 votes but a judge ordered a rerun after it was revealed more than 70 illegal votes were cast due to districting errors made by Habersham County election officials.

District 28 includes a portion of Habersham and all of Banks and Stephens counties.
