Halloween is a holiday for kids (forget all that pagan stuff, we’re talking homespun, simple fun, dress-up for candy Halloween, here). Unfortunately for many children trick-or-treating is not an option. They have illnesses and special needs that prevent them from enjoying this annual fall ritual. Not an option, that is, until now.
The Ainsley Paige Higgins’ Dare To Hope Foundation is teaming up with the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office and local volunteers to host a Trunk or Treat for special needs children and their families tomorrow, Sat., Oct. 18, from 3-5 p.m. at Habersham Central High School in Mt. Airy.
Saturday’s event in Habersham is one of four Trunk or Treats the Dare to Hope Foundation is hosting in Georgia tomorrow. The others will be held in Suwanee, Woodstock and McDonough.
Organizers say the purpose of the event is to give children with rare diseases, complex medical conditions and special needs an opportunity to enjoy an evening of outdoor fun with their friends and families. Volunteers have been recruited from throughout Habersham to decorate their cars – and themselves – and hand out candy, snacks and prizes to the children who attend.
The event is free and open to all special needs children, their families and friends. Between 100-150 children are expected to attend. Kids should dress in costume (adults, too, if they choose).
