TMU’s Luke Peavy shot a 1-over-par 73 on Tuesday, holding off all other men’s competitors to finish the Georgia Mountain Invitational at 144 to win the tournament by four strokes. The Truett McConnell team finished runners-up to Reinhardt.
The Bears entered three teams into the event, but only the A-team counted into the team competition. The B-team for the tournament finished with the same team score as Reinhardt, a 617, and the A-team finished with a team score of 625.
“I am incredibly proud of my young team in the tournament,” said head coach Steve Patton. “Our lone senior,Drew Schmidt, did a great job of grinding out a score that counted today, and our freshmen and sophomores got some incredible experience in this tournament. They really grew up before our eyes, and the future looks bright for the Bears.”
The Bears had four players finish on the All-Tournament team, including Peavy, Weston Sapp, Matt Smith andDawson Day. Sapp shot even-par 72 on Tuesday to get into a tie for fourth place with Day. Smith finished in a tie for sixth place.
“To my knowledge, we have never had four players make the All-Tournament team, including having the low medalist at the tournament in Luke,” said Patton. “What is exciting for the program is that those four players were three freshmen and a sophomore.”
The Bears will get back to action next week in Demorest at the Piedmont Fall Invitational.
