Truett McConnell University in Cleveland opened its new disc golf course after the inaugural ribbon-cutting ceremony held on Wednesday, February 24.
The excitement of the ceremony brought students, faculty, and local disc golf enthusiasts to view the nine-hole course on the university’s campus.
Avery Dowdle, a TMU sophomore who envisioned and created the course, said, “I live right outside of Charlotte, North Carolina, which is a large hub for the disc golf community. Coming to north Georgia from a place with dozens of courses, I wanted to bring my passion for the sport with me. The nearest course that I could find was a bit of a drive, so finding time to go play while juggling assignments was difficult. I pitched the idea to TMU to build a course on campus, not just for my enjoyment, but so that students and the community would have something new and exciting to experience!”
The course is comprised of nine holes, designed to be a technically challenging course rather than a long course. The course begins behind Miller Hall and wraps around the beautiful TMU campus to end on the front lawn. This course strategy provides for a fun and challenging time as well as an invigorating walk around the natural campus scenery.
Andrew Leviner, Campus Recreational Coordinator, is thrilled to have recently installed this new course and looks forward to spreading the word about disc golf at TMU. “Whether you are a beginner or a veteran disc golfer, this course was built for all. The course is open for students and community players on a daily basis.”
According to Leviner, the course will be open seven days a week, from sunup to sundown. Visitors will need to check in at the front security gate before entrance to campus can be granted. Disc golf equipment can also be rented at the Student Wellness Center for a fee during normal operating hours.
“The most exciting thing to me about this new addition,” said Dowdle, “is that it opens up yet another gateway of opportunities for us as a school to witness to those who may not be here otherwise. If even one person comes to know the Lord through this, it would have been worth all of the time and effort spent. I know the Lord has an amazing plan, and I can’t wait to see what He has in store for the future of the course and this school!”
