Truett McConnell University expands Title IX role in wake of sex abuse allegations

Protesters gathered on the Cleveland campus of Truett McConnell University to push for transparency and truth in the wake of allegations by former student turned staff member, Hayle Swinson, who claims she was groomed and sexually assaulted by former VP of Academic Services Brad Reynolds. As Truett McConnell University undergoes an independent investigation into recent sexual abuse allegations against a former administrator, school officials are moving to bolster student safety and support systems ahead of the fall semester. A key step in that effort is the expansion of the Director of Title IX and Student Advocacy position to full-time status.

In a Friday statement, TMU Acting President John Yarbrough said, “This position gives students the opportunity to report any concerns in a confidential setting.”

In addition, Yarbrough said, “The University has made assistance available for any faculty or staff having difficulty coping with issues caused by these sinful acts.”

‘Unrighteous acts’

The Title IX expansion comes as Truett McConnell’s Board of Trustees oversees an external investigation into abuse allegations against the former Vice President of Academic Services, Brad Reynolds. The independent investigator hired by the Board of Trustees, Richard Hyde of law firm Balch and Bingham LLP, will report his findings directly to the Board.

“The accused abusers are no longer associated with Truett McConnell University, and any civil or criminal action that may become necessary will be dealt with by the appropriate external legal agencies,” stressed Yarbrough. “The unrighteous acts of a few do not define Truett McConnell University.”

Yarbrough said the school would emerge “stronger” and “more focused” on its mission once the facts are known and any necessary actions are taken.

TMU President Dr. Emir Caner has been accused of failing to act on information he was reportedly given regarding the alleged abuse. He and Reynolds were longtime friends from their undergraduate years.

Caner remains on administrative leave while the investigation is being completed.
