Towns County resident arrested on animal cruelty charges

A person was arrested in Towns County in early January after allegedly keeping animals in deplorable conditions, according to the Towns County Sheriff’s Office.

The Towns County Sheriff’s Office responded to the animal cruelty complaint on Old Chicken Farm Road in Young Harris on January 6.

During the investigation, authorities allegedly discovered multiple cats living in unsanitary and distressing conditions. Authorities say the animals were found covered in feces and with severely matted fur.

The cats were rescued and subsequently transferred to The Whiskers Project and The Mountain Shelter Humane Society for care and rehabilitation.

Laneau Hayes, 75, of Young Harris, was arrested and charged with misdemeanor cruelty to animals in connection with the case.
