Towns County man arrested for allegedly sexually exploiting children online

A Towns County man is the latest Northeast Georgian to be arrested and charged with sexually exploiting children.

Working with the Towns County Sheriff’s Office, GBI agents arrested 49-year-old Jamie Burnette on Jan. 14. They charged him with two counts of sexual exploitation of children.

“Multiple reports were received from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children pertaining to the same online user who was uploading child sexual exploitation material to the internet,” says GBI spokesperson Natalie Ammons. The GBI’s Child Exploitation and Computer Crimes Unit initiated an investigation. While executing a search warrant, agents found evidence that led to Burnette’s arrest, Ammons says. After being taken into custody, he was transported to the Towns County Jail.

A Mt. Airy woman was arrested earlier this month on similar charges, and last year, at least fourteen people were arrested in Northeast Georgia and charged with sexually exploiting children.

The investigations are part of the GBI’s ongoing effort to identify and arrest those involved in the child pornography trade. Since the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force started in 2003, agents have arrested over 1,600 suspects statewide.
