The Towns County Sheriff’s Office has launched a neighborhood watch program to bolster civic engagement and deter crime.

Sheriff Ken Henderson met with residents along Clarence Nichols Road and West Union Road on April 8 to support the formation of a watch program in the area.

The meeting, organized by authorities, aimed to empower community members to play an active role in keeping their neighborhoods safe. Henderson emphasized the importance of communication and vigilance among residents.

“Neighborhood Watch encourages citizens to communicate with each other about what’s happening in their neighborhood and to watch for suspicious activities,” Henderson said. “It teaches people what to look for so they can better report details when calling 911.”

According to Henderson, one of the most valuable aspects of a neighborhood watch is having residents serve as the “eyes and ears” of their communities—reporting hazards and potential crimes, which in turn aids law enforcement in the capture and prosecution of offenders.

Residents interested in forming a neighborhood watch in their area are encouraged to contact Tabitha Sellers, community relations coordinator for the Towns County Sheriff’s Office, at (706) 896-4444.
