Top spellers face off tonight in Mt. Airy

Spelling bee champions from 11 local schools received trophies during last year’s district competition

Habersham County’s top student spellers face off tonight in Mt. Airy during the school district’s Scripps Spelling Bee. They’ll compete for trophies, cash prizes and a chance to advance to the state and national Scripps Spelling Bee finals.

Over the past several months, students in the county’s eleven elementary and middle schools have participated in school-wide spelling bees. The winners of those bees will take the stage tonight at the Habersham Central High School Auditorium to determine the county-wide champion.

The event is sponsored by Volunteers for Literacy of Habersham County and the Georgia Association of Educators.

Tonight’s spelling bee begins at 6pm. It’s free and open to the public.
