Toccoa city employee accused of stealing money from elderly man

The GBI arrested a Toccoa City Hall employee who allegedly stole money from an elderly man who paid for a water leak repair.

On Tuesday, August 8, the Toccoa Police Department asked the GBI to conduct a theft investigation.

Investigators say the elderly man, who spoke limited English, made a $2,000 cash payment. When he learned that only $200 was credited to his bill, he contacted the police.

The investigation revealed that Jennifer Nicole Johnson, 35, of Toccoa, collected the money.

On August 10, investigators arrested the city hall employee and booked her into the Stephens County Detention Center. Johnson bonded out of jail the same day. She is charged with theft by deception and exploitation and intimidation of an elderly person.

Once the investigation is completed, the case will be turned over to the Mountain Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.
