TMU Volleyball Ties Single Season Wins Record in Split Tri-Match

The Truett McConnell volleyball team won its 11th match of the season in a three-set win over Allen University Saturday afternoon, tying the record for wins in a single season. The Bears lost a 3-1 match to Union earlier in the day.

Truett McConnell led 8-4 early over the Bulldogs before Union went on a 6-0 run to take a 10-8 lead. Union would not relinquish the lead, taking the first set, 25-17.

TMU battled back in the second set. Leading 11-8, the Bears went on a 7-0 run to take an 18-8 lead. The run was spurred on by the serves of Alex Brake. The Bulldogs put up a fight late in the set, pulling it to 24-22 before the Bears forced a Bulldog error to win the set.

Union took an early lead in the third set, but the Bears were able to pull to within two points at 18-16. The Bulldogs went on to score seven of the final eight points in the set to take the third, and then ran away with the fourth set, 25-14.

Kendall Hardy led the Bears in kills against the Bulldogs with 10, while Zykeria Allen, Georgia Martin and Brake had dig totals of 19, 18 and 14, respectively.

The Bears struggled to get going against the Yellow Jackets, trading points up to the Bears leading 10-5 before an Allen 7-0 run to take the lead. After more trading points, Allen took a 23-21 lead and had set point at 24-22, but the Bears were able to get a 28-26 win in the set behind Allen’s two kills after the match was 26-25 in favor of Allen.

TMU was slow out of the gate in the second set as well, fighting to a 6-6 tie to start the set. After another 7-0 Yellow Jacket run, the Bears fought back, scoring eight of the next 10 points to pull within two and took the lead shortly after. The Bears won the second set, 25-21, before running away with the third set, 25-15.

Hannah Simpson and Allen had double-doubles in the match with Simpson finishing with 10 kills and 20 digs and Allen with 14 and 13. Keri King finished with a game-high 27 digs.

The Bears will look to set a new single season wins record at Bears Night Out on Tuesday against Point. Tailgating starts at 5 p.m. in front of the Bear Cave with the match to start at 6:30.
