It was a big day at the Big Red Apple Festival Saturday as over 5,000 people turned out to enjoy Cornelia’s signature fall event.

The downtown district was turned into a virtual playground with hay rides and laser tag and lots of live music. Amelia Lathem soaked up the fun and the atmosphere. “My favorite thing was the hay ride,” she says, “but also walking around the square and seeing people you know.”

Walking around the square is a big part of the festival, says Cornelia Community Development Manager Jessie Owensby. “Most of our storefronts all had sidewalk sales and that’s really the goal: to get people walking around in downtown.”

This was the Big Red Apple Festival’s 29th year. And as Hurricane Matthew bore down on the Georgia coast, the crisp fall air and sunshine made festival goers glad to be in the mountains. “The weather was perfect, the vendors were amazing to work with, and the entertainment was stellar!” says Owensby. “We had an awesome day!”
