Thousands cast ballots ahead of Tuesday’s election

Over 27% percent of Habersham County’s registered voters have cast ballots ahead of Tuesday’s election.

By mid-afternoon Friday, 7,906 Habersham County voters had voted in the presidential preference and general primaries. Of those, 5,533 cast absentee mail-in ballots. The rest voted in-person during early and Saturday voting.

Approximately 2,800 absentee ballots mailed to voters have not been returned. The elections office will accept them through Tuesday evening.

Voters who visit the polls on election day will use the state’s new voting machines. The Secretary of State cautions there could be long wait times due to procedures put in place because of COVID-19.

“If they have an absentee ballot by mail that they have voted, they can drop the ballot off at our office up until 7 p.m. on Election Day, June 9, 2020,” says Habersham County Election Supervisor Laurel Ellison.

Voters who received absentee ballots but decide they want to vote in person instead may do so on election day by turning in their absentee ballots at their precinct so poll workers can cancel them.

Those who requested but never received an absentee ballot may vote in person on Tuesday by signing an affidavit at their precinct canceling the absentee ballot.

Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger cautions those procedures and routine sanitization of equipment could result in long lines at the polls on election day. Ellison says she’s not sure what to expect. “I have no idea what the turnout might be since we have never had these types of special circumstances due to COVID-19.”

Voters must vote at their assigned precincts on June 9. Ellison encourages anyone who does not know where they’re assigned to visit the My Voter Page on the Secretary of State’s website.
