Genesis 37:24, “And they took him and threw him into a pit. The pit was empty; there was no water in it.”
My favorite expression when I was 13 years old was, “This is the pits.”
Of course, I was referring to whatever 13 year old misfortune had befallen me at the time – being grounded, missing a ballgame, taking out the trash, standing wrong in the hall – the travesties of the life of a 13 year old. There are times in our lives however when we do find ourselves “in the pits.” Joseph was no different. He was the favored son of Jacob, the grandson of Isaac, the great-grandson of Abraham, and his brothers did not like him. They staged his death, telling their father Joseph was killed by wild animals, threw him in a pit, and sold him to the slave traders.
In life we all find ourselves in a pit at various times. Sometimes we were pushed into it; sometimes our own stupidity brought us to the depths of the pit; and sometimes the circumstances around us put us there. And even in the mud and the muck, God is with us.
If you know the whole story of Joseph, later he became second in command in Egypt. That is a long way from the pit he found himself in only years earlier. Your pit may be financial; it may be a health issues; it may be loss or grief. But even in the middle of the pit, God can bless us because He is right in the pit with us. We are not alone.
Know, even in the darkest of pits, God hears us, loves us, and will help us. We only need to trust in Him.
