The cast will perform thirteen shows led by HCT stalwarts Amber Miller and David Shalikashvili in the lead roles of Maria and Captain Georg von Trapp. Jack Molnar, who portrayed the Captain in the HCT production eleven years ago, returns this time around as Uncle Max.

“I would love to play the Captain again, but I am a little long in the tooth now,” explains Molnar.

Molnar is a familiar face to HCT fans and beloved member of the HCT family. This run of The Sound of Music marks his 51st production with the local community theater.

“What makes this show extra meaningful to me is seeing some of our local kids grow up on our stage,” Molnar says. “When I played Captain Von Trapp in 2008, Maggie Smagur, now playing the Mother Abbess, was Marta. And Madeline McClurg, our musical director for this production, played little Gretl. How special it is to see them grow up and mature in all their talents right on our stage.”

From the Midwest to the Alps

The Sound of Music comes on the heels of HCT’s successful sold-out run of another Rodgers and Hammerstein classic, Oklahoma! Now, instead of the wheat fields of the Midwest, the John Kollock stage is being transformed into 1938 Austria.

It tells the story of a young tomboyish postulant named Maria who is sent away from the Salzburg abbey where she lives to serve as the governess in the home of a widowed naval captain with seven children. Romance blossoms as Maria infuses music, laughter, and love into the von Trapp family home. Danger lurks as the Nazis move into the family’s homeland.

Based on the real-life story of Maria von Trapp, the 1959 stage play was adapted into a movie in 1965 starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. The movie won five Academy Awards and introduced the world to this spirited and inspiring tale.

The HCT production will thrill audiences with the Tony®, Grammy® and Academy Award® winning Best Score, including “My Favorite Things,” “Do-Re-Mi,” “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” “Edelweiss” and the title song.

“The vocal talent in this cast is incredible, from the children to the adults. I cannot wait for our patrons to hear them perform,” says Assistant Director Lynne Warren.

The show opens September 19 and will run Sept. 19-22, 26-29, Oct. 4-6. It’s nearly sold out but a few tickets are still available. To purchase tickets online visit habershamtheater.org.
