The Tallulah Falls Town Council voted unanimously Thursday, May 15, to amend its ordinance regulating camping on town property, allowing for limited mayoral approval in certain cases.
The new amendment permits the Mayor to authorize overnight stays on town property when a request is made and no regular Town Council meeting is scheduled before the proposed date of camping. This change streamlines the process for returning campers who are already in good standing with the town.
While the Town Council remains the primary authority for approving camping on public property, the amendment offers flexibility for recurring guests who contribute positively to the community.
One such example is Gary and Donna Verdino, a couple who have camped behind the Town Hall for nearly 20 years. During their seasonal visits, the Verdinos have regularly performed community service, fulfilling the town’s ordinance requirement that campers contribute at least 24 hours of volunteer work.

Mayor and council members noted the value of the Verdinos’ long-standing relationship with the town and acknowledged the importance of supporting trusted visitors who provide meaningful contributions.
The ordinance amendment applies only to campers who have been previously approved and remain in good standing with the town. All others must still go through the formal approval process with the Town Council.
