Talks continue between Habersham Medical Center and Northeast Georgia Health System

Commission Chair says decision on possible partnership may be reached by the end of the year

Talks continue about a possible partnership between Habersham Medical Center (HMC) and Northeast Georgia Health System (NGHS). The two have been in discussions since January about NGHS possibly acquiring HMC, but still no decision has been made.

A news release issued this afternoon by HMC administrators states the two “have agreed to continue discussions as both sides explore affiliation opportunities to best meet the healthcare needs of the Habersham community and region.”

Habersham Medical Center signed a letter of intent with Northeast Georgia Health System in January to enter into exclusive discussions about a possible business arrangement. At that time, officials said the process could take up to 12 months.

“Both organizations have completed the necessary and appropriate due diligence. However, given industry changes and the complexities associated with an affiliation, all parties agree more conversation is warranted before taking action,” says Kim Crawford, chairman of the Habersham County Hospital Authority.

“We agree that an alignment will best meet the needs of the community, and we still believe NGHS is the most logical partner for HMC,” says Carol Burrell, president and CEO of NGHS.

“The Commission is very pleased that conversations will continue,” says Victor Anderson, chair of the Habersham County Commission.  “Our goal is for the discussions to reach a conclusion by the end of the year.”
