Tacky Prom has a date (do you?)

’80s themed event to be among first held in soon to be newly remodeled Cornelia Community House.

For years, Cornelia made waves with its Tacky Prom event held at the Community House. This year, Tacky Prom is making a comeback to the lineup of events for 2017, but with big changes in store.

The City of Cornelia brought the event back after several people suggested it to Community Development Manager Jessie Owensby. “I just kept hearing all this buzz about Tacky Prom since the day I started working, and how much fun it was, and that I should do it again, so I thought I would give it a shot!”

Since the Community House flooded in early January, extensive remodeling is taking place. This means the Tacky Prom will be one of the first events to take place in the newly renovated Community House!

The theme for the 2017 Tacky Prom is 80s. People are asked to don their best 80s gear complete with puffed sleeves, leotards, bangs, etc. for a chance to walk away with the crown at the end of the night.

Local disc jockey Clay Christy will be showing off his 80s genre music skills, and a table decoration contest will also take place. Anyone who is interested is asked to claim a table to decorate in the most 80s way possible for a chance to win a prize. Owensby says, “This is just a good way to get people involved. The more people are involved, the better the turnout will be, and this is going to be a really fun party, so I don’t know why people wouldn’t want to jump in on the fun.”

The Tacky Prom will be held Friday, March 10 from 8 p.m.-11 p.m. at the Cornelia Community House. Admission is free. There will be a cash bar, dancing, games, prizes and a Prom King and Queen. You must be 21 or older to attend.
