If your car tag is coming up for renewal in late May or June, you might want to consider getting it early.
The Georgia Department of Revenue is upgrading its vehicle registration and titling system. As a result, some services will be unavailable beginning May 21 through the end of the long Memorial Day weekend. During this time, county tag offices will not be able to process certain transactions.
Habersham County Tax commissioner June Black says the county will not be able to process tags and titles “from 12 noon on Thursday, May 23 until we open again on Tuesday, May 28.” She says the office will still be open for property tax and mobile home payments during that time.
Georgia car dealers won’t be able to access the state title system but they will be able to issue temporary operating permits to buyers over the Memorial Day weekend.
Walk-in customers may experience delays and longer than normal wait times during the month of June. Vehicle owners with renewal dates in May and June who normally renew in person are encouraged to do so prior to May 20 to avoid delays.
Those who ordinarily renew online will not experience delays, according to the state tax office. Also, the changeover will not impact the Department of Driver services.
The state revenue department is switching over to a system called the Georgia Driver Record and Integrated Vehicle Enterprise System (DRIVES). The system “will improve efficiencies and reduce costs for handling the annual registration of over 10 million vehicles,” says Department of Revenue Commissioner Lyne Riley.
The Habersham County tag office is located in the tax commissioner’s office at the new County Administration Building at 130 Jacob’s Way in Clarkesville.
