Two major regional banks in Georgia and Tennessee are combining in the largest bank merger of the year. Columbus-based Synovus and Nashville-based Pinnacle Bank will join in an all-stock transaction valued at $8.6 billion.
The combined companies, which will have $116 billion in total assets and $95 billion in deposits, will operate under the name Pinnacle Financial Partners with its corporate headquarters in Atlanta and banking operations in Nashville.
What the merger means for customers
The combined firm will retain the Pinnacle Financial Partners name and operate approximately 400 offices across nine states, more than doubling Pinnacle’s current presence.
Clients of Pinnacle can expect no immediate changes to their accounts, services, or relationships with their financial advisors. The bank assures customers that familiar faces and the same level of personalized service will continue.
“This merger allows us to expand our reach and enhance the services we provide, while keeping the people and values that define Pinnacle,” company officials said in a statement.
Synovus operates 244 locations across Georgia, Alabama, South Carolina, Florida, and Tennessee. Its offerings include private banking, mortgage services, capital markets, and treasury management—services that complement Pinnacle’s portfolio.
The merger positions the firm to become the largest bank holding company headquartered in Georgia and the largest bank headquartered in Tennessee.
The merger is also expected to boost community investment, with greater resources to support local projects and initiatives.
Account security
Pinnacle warns customers to be cautious of scams during this transition period.
“We will never call, email, or text asking for personal information or computer access,” the bank emphasized. Any suspicious contact should be reported directly to Pinnacle at 1-800-264-3613.
The merger is subject to regulatory approval and shareholder votes, with closing expected in the first quarter of 2026. Until then, Pinnacle and Synovus will continue to operate independently.
