Suspected shooter in custody

A Lakemont man is in jail charged in a weekend shooting near Cornelia. Authorities say 37-year old Robert Shook turned himself in at the Habersham County Detention Center Monday morning following a manhunt that extended into Rabun County.

Habersham County Sheriff’s Investigator Richard Stein says Shook was trying to break into his ex-girlfriend’s apartment on Lock Road when he shot a 55-year old Stephens County man who was inside the apartment. The unidentified victim was shot in the arm with a small caliber handgun. He was treated and released from Habersham Medical Center.

Stein says the shooting happened around 6:30 Sunday morning. It was the second time Shook had been at the residence. Stein says Shook busted out the window during an earlier altercation with his 37-year old ex-girlfriend. People inside the apartment called 911 and deputies responded. Shook returned hours later and tried to crawl through the broken window. Investigators say it was at that point that he allegedly reached in through the window with a handgun and shot the unidentified man.

Deputies and K-9 units searched the area. A warrant was taken out for Shook’s arrest. Stein says the Habersham County Sheriff’s Office notified the Rabun County Sheriff’s Office of the arrest warrant because Shook lives in Rabun. “Rabun County contacted members of Shook’s family and people he knows to let him know they were actively searching for him in their county,” Stein says. “That got the message out to him and he decided it was in his best interest to turn himself in.”

Shook is charged with aggravated assault. Stein says more charges may be filed. “The investigation is still ongoing,” he says, “there’s still lots to do.” The victims names are being withheld because domestic violence was involved.
