A Gainesville man who had been on the run since January is back in Georgia to face attempted murder charges.
U.S. Marshals arrested 43-year-old Guillermo Vazquez Martinez in Houston, Texas. He was wanted for the January 30 shooting that critically injured two men at the Village Shoppes at Gainesville off Dawsonville Highway.
Police called the shooting a “targeted attack,” saying the victims had a connection to Martinez.
Both men survived. Martinez fled, and police filed charges against him the next day. They had been searching for him since.
The Gainesville Police Department worked with its federal law partners to track Martinez to Texas, where he was recently arrested and extradited to Georgia.
“Those that commit heinous crimes may think they can outrun their charges, but the justice system and law enforcement will track them down. Partnerships across the nation are key in these types of investigations,” says Gainesville Police Chief Jay Parrish.
Police charged Martinez with two counts of attempted murder and aggravated assault and one count of aggravated battery. He’s being held in the Hall County Jail.
