Suspect who sparked manhunt charged with multiple offenses

The man who fled from state troopers, sparking a daylong manhunt Monday in Habersham County, faces multiple charges in connection to that incident.

A drone helped authorities find Rahim Abdullah near the Tom Arrendale Interchange east of Clarkesville. That’s where Abdullah wrecked earlier in the day during a pursuit and fled on foot.

Abdullah spent hours eluding officers until his capture around 6:30 Monday evening, Nov. 6.

The Georgia State Patrol has charged the 50-year-old with a host of traffic charges. Those charges include driving under the influence, improper stopping, improper turn, speeding, driving on the wrong side of the road, reckless driving, failure to obey a stop sign, and fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer.

Abdullah is being held at the Habersham County Detention Center.

The state patrol says Abdullah initiated a pursuit with a state trooper who tried to stop him for a traffic violation on GA 365. The pursuit ended when Abdullah wrecked, trying to exit onto the on-ramp of GA 365 and GA 17 before losing control and crashing.

Athens-Clarke County police had issued a lookout for Abdullah after he fled during an attempted stop on Nov. 3. The lookout says Abdullah was wanted on outstanding warrants for a domestic incident in October. The victim was later found dead.

Police said he also allegedly pulled a gun on someone at Bethel Homes in Athens.

Concerns for public safety led law enforcement to issue a public warning that Abdullah was  “armed and dangerous.”

Officers from multiple state and local agencies, including the state patrol, Department of Natural Resources, Department of Corrections, and Habersham and Rabun County sheriff’s offices, assisted in the search.
