Suspect still being sought days after escaping local hospital

Habersham County deputies are still on the lookout for a man who escaped from a local hospital earlier this week. Billy Vann Khan disappeared Sunday while being treated for injuries he sustained in a wreck during a police chase on Level Grove Road in Cornelia.

Khan struck a ditch and crashed into a picnic table between Level Grove Baptist Church and McDonald’s. He fled the wreck on foot according to Habersham County Sheriff’s Lt. Matthew Wurtz. K9s helped track him down and Khan was taken into custody a short time later.

He was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville by ambulance. Lt. Wurtz says, “It was later determined that Khan had removed all the monitoring devices that medical staff had placed on him, and left the hospital prior to completing his medical care.”

Khan faces numerous charges in Habersham County including fleeing and attempt to elude, improper u-turn, failure to maintain lane, hit and run, striking a fixed object, open container, and obstruction of an officer. An unrelated probation violation charge is pending against him Gwinnett County.
